Chapter Twelve

Shabbat ended when we saw three stars in the sky on Saturday night. Dad made a blessing over the wine, and we passed around a spice container filled with sweet-smelling cloves. Next, he lit a braided havdalah candle that had three wicks. We held up our hands to see the reflection on our nails, and he said a blessing for us to have a good week.

Now that the Sabbath was over, I had to work on my business plan. So far, taking care of Mei-Mei had been easy-peasy. I figured I was ready to take my business to the next level.

Avi was sitting at my desk holding a pen. “Pinky, how do you spell conscientious?” he said. “Does it have one c or two?”

“Why do you want to know?”

“Because I’m working on our flyer. It’s going to say that we’re conscientious pet sitters.”

“Our flyer, Avi?” I crossed my arms. “Since when did I give you permission to make a flyer about my business?”

Avi had on his sad face. “I was only trying to help.”

I sighed. “Well, let me see what you’ve written. I might have to make some changes.”

Avi handed over a piece of paper. Across the top in bold letters, he’d written Avi and Pinky Bloom: Consheeinshish Pet Sitters.

I took out a red pencil like the one my teacher, Mrs. Goldblum, uses to correct our papers. I changed the sign to Pinky Bloom: Pet Sitter & Avi Bloom: Assistant Pet Sitter. Then I added our phone number so people could contact us if they wanted to hire us.

“I can make more that look just like that,” Avi offered. “And I can pass them out for you at the pet show.”

Maybe having Avi for an assistant wouldn’t be so bad. “Fine, go ahead.”

Avi took out more paper and got to work. “Pinky, did you know that hissing cockroaches can climb up the glass walls of an aquarium and escape?”

“Thanks for letting me know, Avi. Your cockroaches had better not crawl into my bed when I’m asleep. Now please stop bugging me. I need peace and quiet to concentrate on my business plan. I don’t want to hear another sound.”

That made me think about Dad’s shofar. Why didn’t it make a sound? Had someone done something to damage it? Maybe it had been sabotaged!

I took out my detective notebook and started a new case entry. Under SUSPECTS, I wrote, Mr. Simon???

But Mr. Simon had no motive for selling Dad a silent shofar. In fact, as far as I knew, nobody had a motive for sabotaging Dad’s shofar.

This case was going to be hard to crack!
